First Impressions: Escape from Planet Earth

Hey guys, welcome to another installment of First Impressions. Yes, I know, it's been a while since I've done one of these things. But I needed to write this down.

I have recently seen the Disney movie Wreck-It-Ralph. What did I think of it? It was AMAZING!! I mean it, it is one of Disney's best movies I've seen in recent years. The concept was an amazing love letter to a hardcore video gamer like myself, the characters were all memorable, the voice actors did a fantastic job with their performances, the animation was beautiful, and the references are great. I felt that Disney is really taking note of the work that Pixar is doing with their movies because Wreck-It-Ralph feels like Toy Story mixed with Who Framed Roger Rabbit? with video game characters. I felt like I was watching a Pixar movie with Wreck-It-Ralph and I was seeing a Disney movie with Brave.Even the cartoon short Paperman was incredible! It was brilliant, had fantastic black and white animation, and had a great charm to it. I'm hoping that this short will win for "Best Animated Short" in the Oscars as oppose to La Luna. I like them both, but Paperman blew me away! If you haven't seen Wreck-It-Ralph yet, what are you waiting for? Go see it now!

But we're not here to talk about Wreck-It-Ralph. I'm going to talk to you about one of the trailers I saw for an upcoming animated movie. I've seen movies that I was thrilled to see such as Oz: The Great and Powerful, Rise of the Guardians, and The Hobbit. But then the mediocre and unimpressing movies, in my opinion, showed up like The Smurfs 2, The Croods, Despictable Me 2, and a kid with a dinosaur that I don't really remember. The last trailer I saw before going into Paperman is the movie I'm going to be talking about. It's called Escape from Planet Earth.

The movie is about two brothers from the planet Baab. One of them is a strong and admired space pilot named Scorch Supernova and the other one is the leader of the space station BASA named Gary. When BASA's chief tells Scorch of a dangerous mission involving a dark and dangerous planet, he decides to go there. He lands on the dark and dangerous planet, which happens to be Earth, and gets captured by the men from Area 51 led by a mean general named Shanker. When Gary finds out of Scorch's capture, he, his wife, and son work together to save Scorch and he meets up with some kooky aliens who are locked up in Area 51.

Out of all the trailers I saw, I found this one to be the second most mediocre movie I've seen. The first being that dinosaur movie. It's a bit underwhelming, cliched, dumb, and predictable. I felt that I've seen countless movies like this and I'm not interested in seeing it. It sort of reminds of Planet 51, but in reverse. The man who is directing this movie worked on other movies such as Despicable Me and Horton Hears a Who, so immediately it doesn't sit with me that this is going to be good. There are a lot of good movies for kids that are coming out this year and next year that are going to unique and different and this one will be one of those movies that'll blend in with the crowd as nothing special.

Here's the trailer for your enjoyment. If you are thinking of seeing this movie or you're going to skip it, post it in the comments below.

That's all for now. Hope to see you around Old School Lane soon. Thanks for reading.

First Impressions: Doom 3: BFG Edition

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of First Impressions. Today we're going to take a look at a upcoming remastered edition of a FPS classic: Doom 3: BFG Edition.

The original Doom 3 was released at August 3, 2004. At the time, it was dark, scary, had a creepy atmosphere, and creepy monsters appearing where you least expect it. The game had really good reviews from both critics and gamers saying that it was one of the best FPS games that was released that year. However, Doom 3 is not a household name compared to other classic FPS games. Why is that? Well, I'm going to give you reasons why I think so.

1. There was another FPS game that was released a few months after Doom 3 that took the world by storm. Everyone that I knew played that FPS game 50x more than Doom 3,even after the next installment was released 3 years later. What FPS game was that?

That's right: Halo 2. Despite the crappy ending, Halo 2 had gotten everything right. The cool weapons, the different levels, the memorable characters, and, of course, the multiplayer aspect. Doom 3 did have multiplayer, both local and online, but Halo 2 was not only 10x better, but the most popular online multiplayer game of XBOX Live. When the online multiplayer was about to shut down for good in April 2010, the last games on XBOX Live lasted for weeks. If you're wondering why not a lot of people talk about Doom 3 as much, it's partly because of Halo 2. It made Doom 3 overlooked.

2. Doom 3 didn't have the spark from its predecessors. The game didn't take place in Hell, like the previous games. It took place in an space station that was located in Mars. While I did say that the game had a dark, creepy atmosphere, that's one of the major flaws of the game. The gameplay had the main character walk around the space station with his flashlight. It becomes very dark without it and you could barely see your surroundings. When an alien creature goes after you, you have to switch between your weapons and the flashlight. That stops the game flow fairly often and it becomes old really fast. The creepy atmosphere with the killer aliens was done to its full potential with the Dead Space series.

The weapons are also a flaw. While it is true that the same weapons that are used inDoom 3 were used in the previous games, you have to understand this. FPS games came a long way after Doom 2 was released. Golden Eye 64 reimagined what a next gen FPS game was and Halo brought out the popularity of the FPS genre to the mainstream audience. It also brought us different weapons to play around with: The Needle Gun, The Energy Sword, the different grenades, you get the idea. Doom 3 just seemed a bit dated with its weapon choice. They weren't memorable, with the exception of the BFG. It had your typical shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher, etc. It seems that we were a bit spoiled with the different variety of weapons that we have gotten over the years, so it was kind of a letdown that id Software didn't give us any new toys to take down evil baddies.

Also, the game didn't take place in Hell like in the previous version. While we did play a level of Hell in the finally, it wasn't enough. Surprisingly, Hell isn't used as much in video games, even today. It was a lost opportunity to show the Doom series for a new generation and that's a real shame. If we had more time on hell on Doom 3, then it would have done a bit better with the setting.

Now id Software is going to try to give it another go with releasing Doom 3 again on the XBOX 360 and PS3 for a newer generation. It was said that they're going to fix all the flaws from the original, including the switching between the flashlight and the weapons. That's all gone now, thank God. The main character is going to be wearing armor that's mounted with the flashlight. Also included are a checkpoint save station, new levels, three new weapons, new enemies, a new expansion pack called The Lost Mission, and new online multiplayer. Not to mention that the game will include both Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 3: The Resurrection of Evil as playable features similar to the Splatterhouse remake did with including the original Splatterhouse trilogy.

I'm really excited about this, but I'm really disappointed that id Software did this reboot instead of giving us Doom 4. It was mentioned at Quakecon 2007 and we're still waiting for it. I know that John Carmack had said time and time again that Doom 4 will come out soon, but let's not hope that it gets overhyped and underwhelming like Duke Nukem Forever. Let's just hope that this gives id Software the push that it needs to rise back to the top again like they were in the 90's. Here's the trailer for your enjoyment.

Will Doom 3: BFG Edition be in your list of games to buy this year? Are you excited about this reveal or not?

That's all for now. Hope to see you around Old School Lane real soon. Take care.

First Impressions: Wreck-It-Ralph

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of First Impressions. Around this weekend, I'm going to be watching The Pirates! Band of Misfits, so expect a review on that movie sometime next week. Not long ago, Kevin called me and told me of an animated Disney movie about an evil video game character trying to be good. He also told me that there will be numerous amounts of other characters based on popular video game series making cameos similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit when there were cameos of a bunch of cartoon characters from different companies coming together. At first, I thought he was joking. But then, I looked it up online and he was telling the truth. Sorry I didn't believe you, Kevin. Coming around November is a new animated Disney movie called Wreck-It-Ralph.

The movie is about an evil video game character named Wreck-It-Ralph, who is the main villain in an arcade video game called Fix-It Felix Jr. The concept of the game is that the hero, Fix-It-Felix, is fixing the buildings that Wreck-It-Ralph destroys. It's sort of like a mixture between Donkey Kong and Wrecking Crew for the NES.

However, he's getting sick of being called the "bad" guy and he wants to prove to everyone that he can be good. But it isn't going to be easy since it's his nature to be the bad guy in the video game. It was the way he was programmed. He's hoping to prove them wrong.

He escapes from his video game and ends up in another one called Hero's Duty, a first person shooting game about the main hero named Sergeant Calhoun fighting against aliens called the Cy-Bugs. Although it kind of take on the name similar to Call of Duty, it's sort of looks like Halo and Space Invaders, with a color palette similar to Tron.

Another video game he enters is a racing game called Sugar Rush. It's a colorful world filled with candy, cookies, and other sweets. He meets up with a female character named Vanellope von Schweetz who tells him that there's a huge threat that's going to affect her game as well as all of the arcade games. She blames Wreck-It-Ralph as the cause of this. He, along with other video game characters work together to stop the threat before the video game world becomes disastrous.

Some of the cameos of video game characters that have been confirmed so far are as follow:

Dr. Eggman from the Sonic the Hedgehog series
Zangief from the Street Fighter series
Kano from the Mortal Kombat series
Bowser from the Super Mario Bros. series
Clyde from Pac-Man
Coily the Snake from Q-Bert
Dr. Wily from the Mega Man series
M. Bison from the Street Fighter series

Now, I'm both beyond skeptical and excited at the same time about this movie. I'm going to explain why.

Skeptical

General consensus have proven time and time again that movies based on video games mostly suck. Most of the time, they don't follow the original story line or concepts of the video game it's based on and makes it confusing for fans and movie goers. Sometimes, the problem is in the casting of the movie roles of the video game characters. Whether they look or act nothing like the characters they're representing, it makes some of these movies unwatchable.

Another thing to mention is the plot is somewhat tiresome. We already had animated movies in recent years about a bad guy trying to be good, such as Despicable Me and Megamind. So, it's kind of a disappointment that they're going in this route instead of something completely different. But if they can put a different spin on it, then I can forgive that. But we'll see what happens.

Excited

I love this concept! If Disney does this movie justice, then it will be fantastic. I mean, come on, doesn't it sound awesome? An animated movie based on video games with old school arcade characters, classic characters from games we grew up with as cameos, and traveling around a video game world. It's like Who Framed Roger Rabbit meets Tron, that is amazing! It's being directed by Rich Moore, who was an animator for animated shows like The Simpsons and Futurama. The producers are Clark Spencer (who produced Lilo and Stitch, Bolt, and Meet the Robinsons) and John Lasseter (who was a director and executive producer of many Pixar movies), so I know that they'll do a good job. The voice cast also sounds pretty good, such as John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, and Sarah Silverman.

I think that there might be a bright future for creating a movie based on video games if this is done right. I mean, if the movie adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World can get it right, then why can't this? We'll just have to see and find out this upcoming November.

That's all for now. Tune in next time as I do a collaborative review of Pokemon: The First Movie with Fusionator from the website Manic Expression and a movie review of The Pirates! Band of Misfits. Hope to see you around Old School Lane real soon. Thanks for reading. Take care.

First Impressions: God of War: Ascension

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of First Impressions. Today we're taking a look at the latest upcoming installment in the popular hack-and-slash God of War series, God of War: Ascension for the PS3.

Not much has been revealed, but from what I know, this game chronologically takes place before Kratos became the "Ghost of Sparta" and made the deal with Ares, the God of War, to be his slave. So apparently, it takes place before the other God of War prequels from the PSP, God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta and God of War: Betrayal for the Java ME.

While I do love the God of War series, I was a tad bit disappointed that this new God of War game doesn't take place after God of War III after having one of the most unsatisfying endings in video game history. Don't get me wrong, I love everything else that God of War III did; the weapons, the graphics, the epic battles, the story, the atmosphere, and the music. But the ending was awful, especially since it has a cliffhanger scene after the credits roll. To me, I feel that this is milking the franchise to make more money just like Microsoft is doing to the Halo series releasing three more games for it.

However, a new prequel does sound like a good idea to dive into the past of Kratos deeper. We could finally see his early years as a Spartan general or maybe we could get more development from the relationship between him and his family. It would be interesting to play that epic battle against the Barbarians where Kratos eventually asks Ares for help.  The possibilities are endless if they do it right. But we'll just see when it comes out. Check out the trailer below and see if this excites you.

Are you excited about this new installment of the God of War series? Are you disappointed? Or do you merely not care? Let us know by posting a comment. That's all for now! Hope to see you around Old School Lane real soon. Thanks for reading.

First Impressions: The Casual Vacancy

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of First Impressions. Today a brand new book was announced that really got me intrigued. A dark comedy novel called The Casual Vacancy written by J.K. Rowling and published by Little, Brown & Co. will be coming out September 27th.

Known for writing the successful Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling is releasing her first novel exclusive for an adult audience. The story takes place in a fictional English town called Pagford which is described as "far more menacing than its pretty facade would indicate". It opens with the sudden death of a popular man whose unexpected demise shocks the town. The battle for his seat on the local council sets off "the biggest war the town has yet seen," with rich people fighting poor, parents battling their teenagers, and wives in conflict with their husbands.

Okay, maybe not that dramatic. But, you get the idea.

The Casual Vacancy will be a completely different from anything that we've read so far from J.K. Rowling. There's no magical world hidden from our normal, non-magic society, no wizards, no witchcraft, no flying broomsticks, no house elves, and no curses. I think that this will be a great opportunity to have Rowling expand her creativity and her writing skills to come up with something that is just as fascinating, just as compelling, and just as epic as any Harry Potter book. Then again, some people might find that she's taking a huge risk by stepping out of a successful franchise that is still popular to this day to embark on something she has never written before. People who have tried to write books for adults after being known for writing books for children never became as successful as they were before. After all, the Harry Potter books were originally intended for children and stepping into the world of adult literature could be disappointing for any fan who was been reading her books for over a decade.

Well, my friends, I'm glad that she's taking the next step by writing this book. While the Harry Potter series was intended for children, adults read it with interest and love as well. You have to understand that before the Harry Potter series, reading books wasn't popular anymore. In a time when teenagers were reading books such as The Babysitters Club or Animorphs, the Harry Potter books were like a breath of fresh air to a tired, dying world of literature. It was like The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia for a new generation. Besides, if she would have continued with the Harry Potter series, what else could she write about? Voldemort is dead, the wizarding world is safe, and Harry is living a happy life with Ginny and their three children. Not a lot to add, to tell you the truth. The series has a complete ending and it doesn't need to be tampered with. We should leave it the way it is. Although, I am still waiting for the official Harry Potter encyclopedia.

Whether you like the books or not, you have to give J.K. Rowling credit. I believe that without her, we wouldn't be surrounded by the slew of popular book series today such as Twilight and The Hunger Games. Also, the children who grew up with the Harry Potter books are becoming adults now and they'll be able to read a brand new book from someone they're familiar with. It will bring up the same excitement to read something completely different from an author that we know that can take our imagination to a new world with interesting people, a dark setting, and a complex story line. I know that she will do an excellent job with this new novel and I will be one of the first people to buy a copy when it comes out.

For more information about the new book, check out J.K. Rowling's new official website
http://www.jkrowling.com/.

That's all for now, everyone. Tune in next time as I review the pilot episode of Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 and a new movie review. Oh yeah, and Kevin's remaining top 20 cartoons until he reaches #1. Thanks for hanging out with us at Old School Lane. Thanks for reading.

First Impressions: Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of First Impressions. Today we’re going to be talking about a sequel based on a Disney video game on the Nintendo Wii. I’m talking about Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two.

To those who haven’t played the first Epic Mickey, the game is about everyone’s favorite Disney cartoon character, Mickey Mouse, venturing in to a place called The Wasteland where forgotten Disney characters and Disneyland attractions would go. After he accidently spills paint over the Wasteland, he creates the Shadow Blot and causes corruption. It’s up to him to undo the mistake he did by getting his magic paintbrush with paint and paint thinner and restoring Wasteland to normal. Along the way, he meets up with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who is not happy with Mickey for ruining his home and taking away his popularity as the official mascot of Disney. These facts are all true, especially since Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was created by Walt Disney first and was in a streamline of popular Disney shorts before Universal Studios bought the character and Mickey became the new mascot.

The game had some platforming mixed with RPG elements similar to Infamous and makes you travel through levels based on classic Disney cartoon shorts and attractions. It was a fascinating game and I loved it, but had too many flaws to call it a masterpiece. First and foremost, the camera controls were awkward. I could never attack my enemies where I wanted or jump where I wanted to before I plummeted to the ground and died. Also, there was a lack of voice acting that kind of disappointed me. Maybe I was expecting to be like Kingdom Hearts, but it was unfortunate that the characters weren’t talking in the game. Besides that, it’s a great game that has multiple endings, ton of side tasks to do, and a darker, serious storyline for a company known for family friendly characters and fun theme parks that take you back to your childhood. I mean, look at this! Yup, and it’s in the official seal of Disney! It’s awesome!

Now when talking about the sequel, it takes Mickey back into the Wasteland where he has to restore peace once again. But this time, he’s not alone. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit will be there to help him along this adventure. What’s that? There’s multiplayer in Epic Mickey 2? You bet! According to Warren Spector, he said “It’s drop-in, drop-out co-op, you can sit down at any time with a friend who is playing as Mickey, and you can take control of Oswald. If you’re playing as a single player, Oswald will be there every second of the game. He’s not just a multiplayer character, he’s a helper, whether you’re playing alone or with a friend or family member.”

Another thing that has been confirmed is that this game will not only have voice acting, but it will be a musical, which I’m really looking forward to. Some of the most iconic songs from our childhoods came from Disney movies and if they can put in the same effort and Disney magic (no pun intended), this will shape up as a fantastic game. To quote Warren Spector again, he said, “I’m such a geek about musicals, I love the co-op and next-gen stuff, but for me, when a character breaks into song, which they do on a regular basis in this game, it’s magic.” For some of you getting burned out about too many musicals being out in the media such as Glee or Smash, this may disappoint you. But as a lover of musicals myself, I am excited!

But sure, multiplayer and music sounds great. But for me, if I can’t enjoy the gameplay, then I won’t enjoy it as much. Will they fix the problems from the previous game? Yes, they will. As I said, the most common problem of the first Epic Mickey was the camera control. Well, they will fix the cameras so that we will have a much more smoother gameplay and better experience. Warren Spector confirmed it as he said, “They’ll be working on it until the day we ship the second game. (There have been) over 1,000 specific changes made to the camera. Our goal is that you will not have to touch the manual camera controls even once to play through the main story path of this game.”

The game will be coming out this fall for the Wii, Playstation 3, and the XBOX 360. If you are a lover of everything Disney, (I’m looking at you, Moviefan12), then this game is definately for you! If you had fond memories of playing old school Disney video games such as The Magical Quest series, Castle of Illusion, or the Kingdom Hearts series, then you can’t miss this. If you had played the first Epic Mickey game, then pre-order this and have a blast going back to your childhoods playing as everyone’s favorite cartoon mouse. Who knows, maybe if the game sells well, then Oswald the Lucky Rabbit will soon be having some new cartoons about him. Or even better, become an additional character to meet and greet in the theme parks. If that can happen, that would be so great! After all, Oswald and Mickey are, in a way, half-brothers and having them together would be fantastic!

Here’s the trailer of Epic Mickey 2 for your enjoyment.

That’s all for now. Expect a special movie review of The Hunger Games soon with Timdiana in his podcast Something Cinematic where I will be guest starring talking about our review of this movie. Hope to see you around Old School Lane real soon. Thanks for reading.

P.S. In three days, we will announce our special summer project. Have you guess what it is yet? I’ll give you a hint: this afternoon, Kevin and I are going to be talking to a special game show host about his years working for the TV network we’re going to be talking about. Guess away!

First Impressions: Ninja Turtles

Hey everyone, welcome to another installment of First Impressions. Today Kevin is going to be talking about an upcoming movie that when first hearing it, it got him enraged. No, scratch that, it got him so angry and frustrated that I had to calm him down to speak proper English and not saying an obscene word every two seconds just to type this article down. So, for those who are just as huge Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans as Kevin is, you feel the same pain as well. So be prepared as you read the most irratating movie that has been written in First Impressions since the one I wrote about Pee-wee’s XXX Adventure. Enjoy.

I am a big Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan. I love everything about it; the comics, the movies, the cartoons, the action figures, and the video games. You already know that I’m a huge Turtles fan when I did my First Impressions on the new TMNT cartoon on Nickelodeon. But when I heard that Platinum Dunes will be doing a reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I was very, very, very, very angry! Michael Bay does not have a bone of originality in his body. He has ruined the horror movie genre with the remakes of Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Amityville Horror. Although, I have no interests of seeing the Transformers trilogy, I have heard that the first one was pretty good. The only movie I actually liked was Bad Boys, but that’s because Will Smith and Martin Lawrence were good together. Anyway, I have a lot to say about this so get comfortable. Here are a few reasons why I know this movie will be a huge disaster.

#1. We don’t need another movie telling us about the origins of the Turtles.

For really dedicated TMNT fans, they already know about the origins of the Turtles from reading the original comics, watching the first episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, watching the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and more. Come up with something creative, Michael Bay. We already know this story too many times. The Turtles became mutants when they encountered some radioactive ooze. Splinter was a rat trained by a Japanese warrior named Hamato Yoshi. When he came across the same ooze that mutated the turtles, he grew in size as well. Shredder, whose real name is Oroku Saki, is the main villain of the Turtles and Splinter and the leader of the Foot Clan. April O’Neal was once an assistant to Baxter before deciding to assist the Turtles and going on their many adventures (in the 1987 cartoon and Archie Comics, she was a news reporter).

Come up with something creative, Platinum Dunes!

2. The Turtles are being depicted as aliens.

Okay, that is the stupidest thing that I have ever heard in my entire life! The Turtles are not aliens, they are mutants. They did not come from outer space, they are regular turtles that were covered with radioactive ooze. Look at the picture above you! They are mutants! It’s in the title of every single incarnation of every single Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles media ever! Even the crappy 1997 live action TV series had a form of the word “mutant” in it.

See? Don’t try to be clever and try to change everything that we know about them, Michael Bay! Don’t try to ruin a great series that we grew up with. What? You’re telling us to chill? Well, fuck you, Michael Bay. Fuck you!!! Every single franchise you have remade or produced, you don’t have a clue about. You don’t know a damn thing about the Turtles, otherwise you would never depict them as aliens. As for me, I’ve known about the Turtles since I was 3 years old. I’ve read the comics, I’ve seen the movies, the cartoons, I’ve played the video games, and I own figures. Don’t tell me to chill, you asshole! Even if I took a trillion of these, I’m still going to find a way to kill you in your sleep.

But unfortunately, it’s already been done. The script has been written by a group of assholes who don’t know anything about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and who are interested in putting in their resumes that they wrote this movie. Nothing more. Since Hollywood is doing mostly remakes or reboots on classic movies already, at least do it right! I mean, anyone can do a better movie about the Turtles than Michael Bay. Anyone! Even Bobo!

Overall, I’m not going to see this atrousity of a great series, but unfortunately, many people will. They are just so nostalgic about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that they would pay money to see a movie based on them, even if it sucks. To quote Robbie Rist, who voiced the character Michelangelo in the original 1990 live-action film adaptation, ”Bay is “sodomizing” the original movies and causing “the rape of our childhood memories.” I couldn’t agree with you more.

Another thing I want to point out is who would the casting actors and actresses be. We know that in the Transformers movies, we had Shia LeBouef, who’s a meh actor and Megan Fox, who’s there just for the sex appeal. Who’s going to be April O’Neal? Kim Kardashian? Paris Hilton? Lindsay Lohan? Who’s going to play Casey Jones? Michael Cera? Channing Tatum? Robert Patterson? Taylor Lautner? Seriously, they’ll choose people who are there just for sex appeal and who can’t act for shit.

A few years ago, people bitched about the 2007 CGI TMNT movie and called it one of the worst movies since Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. Well, I can honestly say that after hearing about this movie, this takes the cake as the absolute worse Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie ever! I mean ever!

That’s all for now. Thanks for hanging out with us at Old School Lane. Catch you later.

-Kevin
