Patricia's Florida Supercon Experience 2016

It's been over 2 years since I went to Florida Supercon. Last year, I went to Magic City Comic Con and Megacon, which were so much fun. But there were so many people I wanted to meet at the convention that I bought a ticket to make my way to Miami once again. However, I also wanted to do two panels, but unfortunately, due to a massive screwup it didn't work out as mentioned a few weeks ago. So they gave me a 4 day pass for free which was very nice. I just got back from the convention borderline exhausted, but enthused of all the wonderful moments I experienced this year. So, here we go with all the wonderful special guests I met.

Tara Strong

Tara is a very well known voice actress being in roles such as Batgirl from Batman: The Animated Series, Bubbles from the original Powerpuff Girls, Timmy Turner from The Fairly OddParents, Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and much more. I was informed by a small group of fans waiting in line that Tara's line was the longest line to wait in when it came to the voice actors who were there. So the group of people consisting of a couple dressed as Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers from Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, a pair of friends dressed as Mario and Luigi from the Mario video game series, a guy with long curly hair and a beard with an acoustic guitar, a guy dressed in a soccer jersey, a guy dressed as military gear with a face mask, and a brony with a lot of My Little Pony merchandise were waiting in the line for almost two hours for Tara to show up. Every time there was a little girl holding a My Little Pony doll or dressed as one of the pony characters, he gave them a card of a My Little Pony convention held in Tampa coming up and they looked really happy about it. After Tara finally showed up, everyone was relieved and cheered.

I helped taking the pictures of the couple, the Mario bros, and the soccer guy and seeing them meeting up with Tara was so sweet. When the guy with the long hair and beard approached Tara, he knelt down in front of her to sign his guitar. She signed it and when he requested to voice Bubbles, he screamed with joy. Seeing that was absolutely priceless since our two hours waiting, he was mostly talking about metal music and posting controversial stuff online such as voting for Donald Trump as president as a joke just to see people pissed off. Then seeing the brony guy was more than thrilled for Tara signing his merchandise. When she did the voice of Twilight, he was very excited. Finally it was my turn and I paid for a photo of her. She was very nice to talk to and seemed just as excited to meet up with her fans as they were meeting with her.

Kel Mitchell

Kel is a very known actor for Nickelodeon shows such as All That, Kenan & Kel, and most recently Game Shakers. I didn't have to wait as long as Tara's, but there were some people who were excited that Kel was there. When I met him, he was one of the coolest guys I ever met. He was so nice and laid back when I approached him for a picture.

Fabian Nicieza

Fabian is a comic book writer and artist who created Deadpool alongside with comic book artist and writer Rob Liefeld. Over the past 3 years since going back to conventions, I have seen so many Deadpool cosplayers and this year was no exception since the recent movie came out. There was a line of Deadpool and X-Men fans waiting for him to sign their books and talking about the origins of the character. When I saw him, he was a cool guy who wanted to post a cloth poster for the picture. I didn't want him to do that since there were other people waiting and didn't want them to wait longer, but he was very persistent. The poster did look really cool and he was nice enough to let me have a picture of him for free.

Steve Blum.

Steve is a very well known voice actor being in roles such as Spike from Cowboy Bebop, Wolverine from Wolverine & The X-Men, Amon from The Legend of Korra, and more. There were so many people waiting in line to meet up with Steve. Another favorite moment in the convention was seeing a group of friends dressed as Spike Spiegel, Faye Valentine, and Edward from Cowboy Bebop in the line waiting to meet up with Steve. Steve was ecstatic to see them and had a picture of them. Then there was a special kid who talked to Steve about his work on Digimon and how excited he was when he did the voices for him. Then it was my turn and he was another really nice, cool guy to meet up with.

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn

Mary is a well known voice actress known for roles such as Julia from Cowboy Bebop, Kurenai and Tsunade from Naruto, Lady Jagaura from Wolf's Rain, Nina from the Tekken series, and more. There was a guy dressed as Tobi from Naruto: Shippuden talking to her about how much the series means a lot to him. Then when I met her, she was very nice to talk to.

Michael Liscio, Jr. and Haven Paschall

Michael and Haven are the voices of Clemont and Serena from the Pokemon X and Y series, who were Ash's companions on his journey to Kalos. This was their very first trip to Florida Supercon and were excited to be in Florida. I saw some kids approach Michael with Pokemon cards to sign with him giving high fives afterwards. They were both very sweet and very approachable to talk to. I hope this isn't their last trip here because I wanted to talk to them more. Also, it made me want to finish watching X and Y since I only saw a handful of the episodes when they first debuted.

Alyson Rosenfeld

Alyson is the current voice of Nurse Joy of Pokemon as well as the voice of Bonnie from X and Y, the younger sister of Clemont and the 3rd companion of Ash's journey to Kalos. She was also incredibly nice who was excited to meet with the Pokemon fans. This was also her first trip to Florida Supercon and she was enjoying been there. Similar to what I said about meeting up with Haven and Michael, I hope that she comes back so I can talk to her more.

Other people I met that I, unfortunately, couldn't get their pictures of were Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario from the Mario series, Zach Callison, the voice of Steven from Steven Universe, Nancy Cartright, the voice of Bart Simpson from The Simpsons, and Paige O'Hara, the voice of Belle from Beauty and the Beast. They were all incredible to meet with.

The things I did in Florida Supercon that I've never done before was taking pictures of the cosplayers, some of which I met up with lines to meet up with the special guests.

That's all I have to say for now. If you want to see more on my trip, you can check out this video where I did a video on it.

Hope to see you around Old School Lane soon. Thanks for reading. -Patricia

Patricia's Florida Supercon Experience 2014

Hey everyone, Patricia here. Last Sunday, I went to Florida Supercon 2014 at The Miami Beach Convention Center. As some of you recall, last year I went to Florida Supercon at the Miami Airport Convention Center. If you want to know how that went, click here to read my experience of that event. So with that said, how did my experience for this year's con go? Let's find out.

The Miami Beach Convention Center was so much bigger and roomier than the Miami Airport Convention Center. Last year, I felt constricted, hot, and claustrophobic due to the smaller main hall with over many vendors and 40,000 plus attendees walking around. This year, with the expanded, AC rooms, it felt more comfortable and more relaxing. There were some special media guests that showed up this year that I was more than excited to meet up with. Here are the people I met.

Caroll Spinney and his wife Debra Spinney

Like most people, I grew up with Sesame Street. I would recall as a kid watching Sesame Street in the morning watching my favorite characters such as Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Bert and Ernie, and more. So, I was even more thrilled to meet up with the man who was a big impact of many people's childhoods. Caroll and Debra were wonderful people who answered some of my questions about working on Sesame Street, meeting with Cheryl Blaylock recently, Caroll's recent documentary I Am Big Bird, and telling him that I'm acquainted with Caseen Gaines, the author of Inside Pee-wee's Playhouse. Interesting thing to note, they're both huge fans of Pee-wee's Playhouse. That's beyond awesome! Here's my autograph of Caroll.

Bill Farmer

Bill Farmer has been the current voice of Goofy and Pluto for over 25 years. He is also the voice of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck on Robot Chicken, Foghorn Leghorn and Sylvester the Cat on Space Jam, and currently is Doc on the new Disney Junior cartoon The 7Ds. He was a great guy who talked to me about being Goofy, The 7Ds, and even told me he started recording as Goofy for Kingdom Hearts III a few days ago. He was an amazing man with a great sense of humor. He even did the Goofy voice for me when greeting me. I was so gleefully joyous when he did that. Growing up with Goof Troop, A Goofy Movie, An Extremely Goofy Movie, and House of Mouse, it was an incredible experience to meet Bill. Here's my autograph of Bill.

Rodger Bumpass

Rodger is mostly known for voicing Squidward Tentacles in SpongeBob SquarePants. However, he's also known for voicing Toxie in Toxic Crusaders, Professor Membrane in Invader Zim, Dr. Light in Teen Titans, and Dr. Anrak from Heavy Metal. Here's my autograph of Rodger on my Invader Zim DVDs alongside Richard Horvitz and Rikki Simons.

Rodger Bumpass was a really cool guy, but the highlight meeting him were the two teenage boys that were getting their autographs from him while I was waiting for my turn. One of the boys, who was dressed as the blue Scout from Team Fortress 2, told Rodger about that when he was an orphan, his earliest and happiest memories growing up was watching SpongeBob SquarePants. The other teenage boy, who seemed to be friends with the blue Scout, also mentioned about classic episodes of SpongeBob such as "Band Geeks". Rodger was very pleased hearing these stories. This moment reminded me of the two teenage boys I saw meeting with Veronica Taylor telling her about their memories growing up with Pokemon last year. Afterwards, I went over to Rodger's Q&A.

It was probably my favorite panel of the con. There were so many people at this con, both little kids and adults. I saw between the two teenage boys and a teenage girl with her 9-year-old brother. Rodger came by answering many questions and doing his Squidward voice. Some of them include what were his favorite episodes, the upcoming SpongeBob movie, and more. He even answered some of my questions regarding about working on Invader Zim and Toxic Crusaders. But my favorite moment in the panel were the people saying quotes from the shows for Rodger to answer in his Squidward voice. Some of them include "Are you finish with those errands?", "Is mayonnaise an instrument?", and "You like Krabby Patties, don't you Squidward?". Looking at the happy, laughing faces, it showed me how big the impact that SpongeBob has left in all of them. It's hard to remember how influential SpongeBob was since it's running longer than it should have with the newer episodes being either mediocre or awful. However, not ONE person brought up ANY questions or comments about Squidward being tortured in the later episodes. Everyone was talking about classic episodes from Seasons 1-3 like "Dying for Pie", "Bank Geeks", "One Bite", "SB-129", and "Help Wanted". I saw that the love of SpongeBob is still as strong as ever.

Next, I met up with Roger Cook, who was a director for a lot of Hanna Barbera and Filmation cartoons. Afterwards, I caught up with the people I met at Florida Supercon last year such as Rikki Simons and Richard Horvitz from Invader Zim and Lloyd Kaufman, the president of Tromaville. They're still great people and it was wonderful to meet up with them again. After that, I met Ernie Hudson, the actor who played as Winston from Ghostbusters. While I didn't have the funds to have a picture or autograph of Ernie, I did tell him how much Ghostbusters meant to me. He smiled and gave me a hug. Now I can say that I received a hug from a Ghostbuster. After that, I went to the big voice acting panel ran by William Salyers, the voice of Rigby from Regular Show, Dana Synder, the voice of Master Shake from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Bill Farmer, Richard Horvitz, and Rikki Simons. It was a ton of fun hearing the questions from the audience and the witty answers from the voice actors. After the panel, I met with William and Dana and got their pictures with them for free.

Afterwards, I went to a Pokemon trivia question panel, a video game room, a classic arcade and pinball room, and saw all the cool vendors full of toys, comic books, t-shirts, and more. Then, I headed home having to go to work the next day. Overall, I had an amazing time at this year's Florida Supercon. Not sure if I'll go back next year, but who knows. But I'm hoping to go to a special event coming this October at New York City. More details about it another time.

That's all for now. Old School Lane will be taking a short hiatus soon due to moving to a new apartment. But, I should have a new episode of Turtle Talk and Casual Chats up soon. Plus, I'm busy with the Re-Open Nickelodeon Studios Facebook page doing a miniseries called Nicksmissal discussing about all the rejected Nickelodeon pilots and concepts that were never picked up. If you haven't seen it yet, here's the first episode down below.

Hope to see you around Old School Lane soon. Thanks for reading.

Patricia's Florida Supercon Experience 2013

Hey everyone, Patricia here and as of yesterday, I came back from Florida Supercon. Florida Supercon is an anime, sci-fi, and video game convention in Miami that occured in July 4-7. I was there on Saturday and Sunday and had done various activities, been through a few panels, and met many great people. Some of the people I met are as follows:

Veronica Taylor

She is mostly known for voicing the original Ash Ketchum from the first 8 seasons of Pokemon, April O'Neal from the 2003 TMNT series, Amelia from Slayers, and many more characters from other anime. Out of all the people that I met, she's the one that I interacted with the most. We talked for a little bit about her years voicing as Ash, her years voicing about April, and which character she relates to the most. While she said that she puts a little of herself in all of them, her years voicing as Ash was something very special. While talking, two teenage boys were shocked that Veronica was the voice of Ash. When she did the Ash voice for them, they were excited. Overall, it was a huge honor to meet her and she might be a guest in one of our podcast someday.

The next two people I met were the voices of Invader Zim characters Zim and GIR, Richard Horvitz and Rikki Simons.

Besides Zim, Richard Horvitz is also known for other characters such as Daggett from The Angry Beavers, Billy from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Alpha 5 from The Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, Raz from the video game Psychonauts, and many more. He was so hysterical as he did the Zim voice the entire time. You can tell with the smile in my face. As for Rikki, I was quite surprised with his calm personality since he voices a crazy character like GIR. Nonetheless, he was so nice and meeting both of them was a real treat. It was even better when they autographed my Invader Zim DVDs.

The next person I met is one of my all time favorite voice actors Jennifer Hale. I was a bit nervous at first meeting her, but as time went on, I relaxed a lot and acted more natural. I talked about how I was a huge fan of her work and that I loved her as Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect series, how Kevin loved her as Giganta, and that James Bevan loved her as Zatanna (he told me to tell her that when I announced on Twitter that Jennifer was going to be there.) Other than that, it was amazing to have finally met her.

Other highlights at Day 1 was seeing all the amazing costumes, seeing Adventure Time fans going gaga over the arrival of Jeremy Shada, the voice of Finn, seeing people going crazy at the FSC Jeopardy game, and being eternally grateful that I bought my tickets in advanced. The line for buying tickets at the door was beyond ridiculously long. Remember kids, plan and be prepared.

Day 2 at the convention was great as well. When I walked into the hotel where the convention center was at, I saw Richard Horvitz walking in as well. Everyone were very nice to him saying good morning, including myself, and he was so gracious and said good morning back as oppose to ignoring them. The first person I met when getting to the convention was Eric Stuart.

Eric Stuart is mostly known as the original voice of Brock and James from the first 8 seasons of Pokemon, Seto Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh, and many other characters from anime. Nowadays, he's a singer who performed a concert on Saturday night and he's very talented. He was a very nice, sweet guy.

The next person I met was another talented voice actor: Gregg Berger.

Gregg was mostly known as the voice of Grimlock from Transformers, Odie and Orson from Garfield and Friends, the Gromble from Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and more. I was low on cash for picture with him, but he was so nice that he allowed me to do it for free. I was beyond thankful for that.

The next person that I met was the founder of Troma Entertanment, Lloyd Kaufman. Lloyd was a bit wacky, but very nice at the same time. My cousin Dominick and I were in the picture while Lloyd and I held a Toxie head. It was surreal, but awesome! Lloyd was even nice enough to offer a tour of the Troma headquarters at Queens when I told him that Kevin was a very huge fan of him. That was so cool of him!

The next person I met was an old friend of mine, Will Nguyen from Willvolution. Willvolution is an video game tournament group that I was involved in from 2006-2009. Will and I met for a short time since he was busy with a tournament, but he was nice enough for us to catch up.

I left early because my sister needed to go to work in the morning so I didn't stick around for the Power Rangers panel and the panel where the Comic Book Men cast were there. The Comic Book Men panel with Ben Johnson, Kevin Smith, and others was very crowded. It was so crowded that there were people who sat in the floor at the front stage and standing at the back of the room. Also George Takei, known as Sulu from Star Trek, was difficult to see as well. There were very long lines to meet him.

Other than that, I had a great time at Florida Supercon and hopefully I'll go back next year.

That's all for now. Hope to see you around Old School Lane soon.
